SMALL FIRM, BIG PLANS:

KDJ Advertising, launched in November 2003 by Tom Score (left) and Norman Clarke, has nine employees, but customers are based all over the globe.
Fledgling ad agency ‘scores’ big points, exceeds ‘norm’

MEDFORD

When bankers suggest launching a business, you listen.  Especially when those bankers are clients pledging to follow your next venture.

That was the case for Tom Score and Norman Clarke, who in November 2003 launched KDJ Advertising, a full-service agency that focuses primarily on financial clients and has offices in Medford and on Wall Street.

Score and Clarke had spent the past decade working together at Madison Avenue firms, where they “operated autonomously as an agency within an agency,” Score said.  But given today’s advertising climate, rife with mergers and downsizing,  they decided to bank on their client support and industry contacts by creating KDJ.

After spending six months planning, they decided the firm would be a “boutique-size agency” and, as such, would offer cost savings over the competition, “without sacrificing deliverables.”

Given their following on the financial community, the duo agreed that they didn’t need to widen their spectrum.  “We didn’t need to join with other specialty agencies, because we are so focused and narrow in scope that people are finding us” said Score.

The duo handpicked their nine-person staff, each of whom worked with them in the past.  “Everyone has been in the business for an average of 20 years,” Score said.  “There’s no learning curve.  We work as a team.”

As a small firm, staffers know every aspect of a project.  “If I am out, anyone can answer a question,” Score said.

The Medford location serves as the firm’s creative headquarters, while the New York office functions as “a meeting place for NYC clients and for those clients from out of state, or out of the country." Clarke said.

One such customer, with its headquarters in Dubai and other locations in Geneva and the United States, found KDJ especially appealing as a boutique agency with big-agency experience.

Scimitar Global Ventures, a fledgling investment firm whose owners cut their teeth at some of the big banks, has gotten help from KDJ with branding, corporate identity, website development and newsletters, Score said.

And as KDJ’s clients grow, they provide the firm with new contacts.  “They recommend us,” Score said.  “It’s a snowball effect.  It enables us to expend at our choosing in our field of focus.”

Collaboration plays an important role in the office, Score said.  “People come to work charged up.  We operate like a family.  We work together, play together and look out for each other and clients,” he said.

“I worked with these people before.  It’s not just skill sets.  You take on the whole person and their families,” Score said.  “It’s not just me or Norman.  It’s the entire team.”

It’s not uncommon, either, to find employees’ children in the office, which is why, Score said, the fridge is always stocked with Juicy Juice.  “You never know when someone’s going to stop by,” he said.
